Funny party resting after their sport making
party organisation

Bild von National Library of Scotland
soldiers taking a rest from entertaining their comrades in traditional vaudeville style. Judging by the other photos in this ‘Horse Show’ series, the men on horses in the background would also have been entertaining the troops with jumping and horseback wrestling. Shows like this were a popular way of boosting the troops’ morale, though photos such as this might well have been staged for propaganda purposes to maintain morale back home.

The Charlie Chaplin lookalike, policeman and man dressed up as a woman, suggests that these soldiers were recreating the slapstick antics of Chaplin’s famous music hall routine on the Western Front. Two clowns with white hats are also sitting in what looks like a bomb crater.

RAFTWET AT ANDY MOON PARTY
party organisation

Bild von rafeejewell
Since leaving several groups, I have been on the search to join again. I have joined and dropped groups as I come across interesting clubs and organizations. Sigh… LL, we really need at least 50… ok, I’ll settle for 30? LOL!

Here are some new clubs that I have been frequenting. All have their own flavor and style. Give them all a listen!

DJ ISItheDreamaker Teskat has his own club now called Domina. I have been there a couple of times now, and it is a fun place. Of course, DJ ISI is one of my favorites but I also stopped in to listen to DJ Weyaman Howlett the other night. FUN!

Got the tp from the DJ Andy Moon crowd to a private little party at his house over on Crack Monkey Cove, home of DJxHalloween’s Divaz Lounge. What started off to be just a few of us grew into a 30 person party with lag to boot. LOL! That was a very fun and chill party.

I heard DJ Renanyoy Oh was spinning at Stupid Q-pit, so off I went. Nur, Lolla, Seismo, Ideal & Olive were all there. I loved the yellow monster! So fun and delightful.

A stop at BassLine Island where they were celebrating Obama win with a flying USA flag and posters.

Club Industry was calling after the monster bass at BassLine, so noize was in the making for me. Ghoulish bloodied bodies made for a dark comment as we danced to the industrial sounds.

My angel joined me at Le Ghetto Hype. We both love this little club. It’s so pretty and welcoming.

Arnaud and Frederick have put together a nice place to chill and hang with some of the best DJ’s spinning. DJ Coggy Nikolaidis was spinning when we got there. Xavi & I ended our day there… whew!

Party of our brave stretcher bearers who were laid low by a German shell
party organisation

Bild von National Library of Scotland
British stretcher bearers killed by a German shell in Peronne, France, during World War I. Bodies lie in a ruined French street with the remains of the stretcher they were carrying twisted between them. The large stones scattered around the bodies give some indication of the force of the shell that killed these men.

Although this photograph reflects the human cost of war far more starkly than those staged for propaganda purposes, the caption emphasising the selfless heroism of the victims suggests that the picture was intended for publication in Britain.

Party of American Engineers working on the light railways on the British front
party organisation

Bild von National Library of Scotland
According to the caption which accompanies it, this photograph shows a group of American engineers working on a light railway. It is difficult to determine exactly what they are doing, whether they are building the railway or working on a piece of machinery positioned on it. In the background a railway engine and light railway tracks are visible. A building with a corrugated iron roof can also be seen. The sun is shining and the ground is dry and dusty.

The presence of Americans in this photograph suggests that it was probably taken sometime between June 1917 and the end of the war. After maintaining a neutral stance for most of the war, in April 1917 America declared war on Germany. By June 1917 the American Expeditionary Force, under the command of General John Pershing, had arrived at the Front.

Working parties following up the advance
party organisation

Bild von National Library of Scotland
Work party on the move, France. A line of foot soldiers carrying equipment are passing a row of horses, some un-laden, travelling in the same direction. Empty baskets lie at the front of the picture and the landscape is visible behind.

New and secure communication and supply lines were vital to an army’s success and it was a constant battle against the elements on the Somme to construct roads, railways and bridges.

Wiring parties going up to the front line after heavy rain
party organisation

Bild von National Library of Scotland
A wiring party making their way along a very wet and muddy road. They are all wearing steel helmets and carrying rifles. Three of the men are rolling large rolls of wire along the road. Two of the men in the distance are pausing on the road for a chat and a cigarette.

Being a member of a wiring party was dangerous and therefore not a popular task amongst the soldiers. The men had to set up wire entanglements using large rolls of wire and steel pickets, which were hammered into the ground, in areas where they could come under enemy fire.

Bild von National Library of Scotland
Soldiers after raiding a German trench, France, during World War I. A group of soldiers pose for the camera. Some of them are smiling, while others have a look of determination. According to the photograph’s original caption they have just returned from raiding a German trench. Two of the men are wearing German helmets, their trophies from the raid, while others are posing with rifle and bayonet.
